Reading is the foundation of all learning.  You can help third-graders in Black River Falls' Red Creek Elementary School master this key skill, as a Read to Success tutor with The Great Rivers United Way!

Studies show if a child is not up to grade level reading by the end of third grade, they almost never catch up. 

Read to Success runs throughout the majority of a school year, generally October - May. Over the course of the 2026-2027 school year, you will work with two or three students, spending 30-45 minutes with them each week during the school day.  

You'll read to your student using a book we've selected that relates to a specific subject and have them read to you as well as participate in fun reading-based activities! To help you and your student feel comfortable and connected,  Great Rivers United Way provides a tutoring bin with literacy related conversation starter materials to help you focus your time together on reading skills.  Materials include question cards such as "what do you think will happen next?"  "Why do you think the character made that choice?"  

In addition to helping your student improve their reading skills, your positive influence can have benefits that will last a lifetime.  The kids need the extra help and their teachers appreciate the extra support you can provide!

Schools require all volunteers have an approved background check on file to work with students.  The Great Rivers United Way Community Engagement Coordinator will contact you to explain more about the program and initiate the required background check.

INTERNSHIP DESCRIPTION:

Gain hands-on experience in promoting health to students and parents in the community by helping coordinate and assist school garden education sessions and recipe demonstrations at local elementary schools. We are looking for 3-4 interns for this upcoming semester. Together with the GROW board, other interns, and volunteers you will lead an essential role in providing community nutrition education, along with assisting our program directors in garden education sessions and recipe demonstration, interns will also enhance their experiences when coordinating volunteers, overseeing garden maintenance, building relationships, evaluating programs, documenting, and community organizing.

TIME COMMITMENT:

Approximately 6-8 hrs/wk totaling a minimum of 90 hours for the semester. Some interns have taken this as an independent study and received credit. Nutrition programming and meetings can be planned around intern’s schedule as long as 5 hours a week are during elementary school hours (8am-3pm). Other requirements can be done throughout each week as you have time.

REQUIREMENTS:

Nutrition/Sustainability Education Interns will be responsible for assisting the program directors with garden classes, helping facilitate garden maintenance tasks and organization of produce getting from garden to cafeteria or classroom, and assisting with volunteer coordination; in addition to weekly meetings with your supervisor.

QUALIFICATIONS:

We are looking for someone who can work independently and as part of a team, is comfortable working with children, has experience coordinating and working with volunteers, and the ability to get from their house to each school - the furthest one is 3.5 miles from UWL campus. Nutrition and garden knowledge is preferred.

Bluff Country Family Resources, located in Hokah, MN, is a nonprofit supporting individuals who have experienced domestic violence and sexual assault.

In our office, we have a space called the Care & Share Corner. This is an area that those we serve can shop freely for much needed items, such as clothing, dishes, and toiletries. Many items in this space are donated (especially clothing items). 

We have a small team, as many nonprofits do, and could use help with sorting and organizing donated clothing items. 

Join a group of about 10 volunteers to go to Catholic Charities Warming Center downtown La Crosse.  While all the guests will be gone, we will be able to help in a variety of ways! We will focus on deep cleaning the facility; including common spaces, sleeping areas, bathrooms, and office spaces.  We'll also be able to help organize and inventory a large number of donations Catholic Charities receives.

Red Cross Disaster Mental Health volunteer teams are active throughout the United States, meeting the emotional and psychosocial needs of disaster survivors and fellow Red Cross disaster workers. These teams respond to disasters of all sizes, from single family fires to large-scale events. 

What does the Red Cross do & what do we need?
The Red Cross provides shelter, feeding, emergency supplies, health and mental support to hundreds of thousands of people affected by disasters of all sizes. We are actively recruiting new Disaster Mental health team members to provide support within your local community. 

What does a Disaster Mental Health team do?
1. Respond to the immediate emotional distress and psychosocial needs of disaster survivors and Red Cross disaster responders
2. Supplement local mental health resources during times of disasters
3. Support the community in building resilience

Eligibility:
1. Currently licensed mental health professionals:
- At minimum, holds a Master's Degree in one of the mental health positions listed below; and
- Holds a current, unencumbered license from, or is registered with, any US state or territory as a social worker, psychologist, professional counselor, marriage or family therapist, or psychiatrist (any level license/registration, including non-clinical licenses such as Licensed Masters Social Worker or LMSW)
2. Current school psychologists and school counselors:
- At minimum, holds a Master's Degree in school psychology or school counseling; and
- Holds a current, unexpired license or certification as a school psychologist or school counselor issued by a state board of education
3. Current psychiatric nurses:
- Have a state license as a registered nurse; and
- Have a minimum of 2 years' experience working in a psychiatric setting, verified by a letter from a current or previous employer

Medical Screener volunteers join the blood collections staff to ensure timely processing of donors at blood drives. Medical Screeners collect and confirm donor demographics and health histories, determine procedure eligibility, and conduct physical exams (oral temperature, pulse, blood pressure). This position provides you with the opportunity to validate your training and skills at a nationally recognized organization while providing service to your community. 

Screen and examine blood donor candidates to approve or defer for health concerns.

Collection and confirm donor demographics, determine procedure eligibility.

Conduct physical exam to include oral temperature, pulse, BP and hematocrit according to procedure.

Facilitate and evaluate self-administered health history.

Comply with applicable Federal, state, and local regulations as well as all American Red Cross policies, procedures, and guidelines.

Time Commitment: minimum of two shifts per month after training commitment.

Training: Orientation to the Red Cross, virtual, classroom and on the job instruction. All training provided free of charge. 

Training will be 40 hours per week for 4 consecutive weeks through a combination of both virtual and in-person training. Please ensure your schedule can accommodate 4 consecutive weeks of training.

STAR offers three broad categories of programming including Para Sports for those with physical disabilities and other mobility challenges, Adaptive Recreation for those with intellectual impairments, and Specialized Exercise Programs.

Our access to food, safe housing, transportation, financial resources and social connections directly impacts our health. These social and environmental factors, also known as Social Determinants (or Drivers) of Health, are one of Emplify Health by Gundersen's public health priorities. Emplify is taking an active role to understand and address these needs for the patients we serve.

Community Resource Connector volunteers, or CRC's, are specially trained volunteers who support this work. CRC's work in partnership with our Office of Population Health staff and community organizations to connect patients with resources to address their social needs, such as transportation, mental health, housing, food, financial, and social support. CRC's will:

As a companionship volunteer you will be matched one-on-one with a senior in La Crescent to serve as a friendly visitor. Companionship visits include conversation, going on walks, doing puzzles, playing games, or simply spending time together. This volunteer experience is flexible based on your availability and can be scheduled weekly, bi-weekly, or sporadically. Often, time spent with a companionship volunteer is the highlight of an individual's day!

You would assist with other fundraisers, have potential to create your own, and help run the ones you get involved with. There will always be multiple people involved in each fundraiser. The meetings are one hour/month plus any additional meetings for current fundraisers.

Our Lobby Host volunteers greet all patients, visitors and coworkers in a positive and professional manner.  They assist patients with directions and general questions, and provide wheelchair transports and escorts throughout our clinic.  Lobby Hosts are needed at our clinics in La Crosse and Onalaska. Deliver more than just a warm meal! The Aging & Disability Resource Center of La Crosse County is looking for volunteers to deliver meals to seniors. Shifts/routes are currently available at our County building (4th & Vine) and the Southside Neighborhood Center (6th & Hood St). Each route takes approximately 30minutes to 1 hr to deliver; roughly 10:15am to 11:30am and average 10 miles (mileage reimbursement available).

The Aging & Disability Resource Center is looking for volunteers at our La Crosse meal sites to help package meals, serve meals and also deliver noon meals to elderly in our community. Routes needed are North La Crosse, French Island and southside of La Crosse. 

Delivery shifts range from 10:15am-12pm and routes average 10 miles. (usually take around 1 hour) By becoming a volunteer of our home delivered meal program you deliver more than just a hot meal. It is also a welfare check on our seniors. 

We have a variety of days and locations available in La Crosse. Flexible schedule and mileage reimbursement available. 

If you prefer not to deliver meals, we are also in need of volunteers to help package the meals for our homebound participants at the meal sites. 

Currently we are in need at Holmen meal sites.  Shift range from 10am until 12:30pm for onsite help and 11am-11:45am for delivering the meals.   

We are looking for volunteers to assist our Recreation Therapy Department with afternoon programs on Saturdays and Sundays throughout the month. Volunteers are not required to do every afternoon program that is scheduled but can choose which dates work best for them. Everybody Bikes UA is seeking volunteers who are willing to help refurbish donated bikes that are awarded to community-members after a brief training. We can work around your schedule.

INTERNSHIP DESCRIPTION:

Gain hands-on experience in promoting health to students and parents in the community by helping coordinate and assist school garden education sessions and recipe demonstrations at local elementary schools. We are looking for 3-4 interns for this upcoming semester. Together with the GROW board, other interns, and volunteers you will lead an essential role in providing community nutrition education, along with assisting our program directors in garden education sessions and recipe demonstration, interns will also enhance their experiences when coordinating volunteers, overseeing garden maintenance, building relationships, evaluating programs, documenting, and community organizing.

TIME COMMITMENT:

Approximately 6-8 hrs/wk totaling a minimum of 90 hours for the semester. Some interns have taken this as an independent study and received credit. Nutrition programming and meetings can be planned around intern’s schedule as long as 5 hours a week are during elementary school hours (8am-3pm). Other requirements can be done throughout each week as you have time.

REQUIREMENTS:

Nutrition/Sustainability Education Interns will be responsible for assisting the program directors with garden classes, helping facilitate garden maintenance tasks and organization of produce getting from garden to cafeteria or classroom, and assisting with volunteer coordination; in addition to weekly meetings with your supervisor.

QUALIFICATIONS:

CASA for Kids is solely focused on advocating for a child's best interest throughout the duration of their CHIPS (Child in Need of Protection & Services) case. Majority of the time, the child has already been placed out of home. Our advocates are trained and vetted before being sworn in as an Officer of the Court. Once their case assignment begins, they maintain a positive and consistent presence in the child's life. Their visits and observations are recorded and presented to the judge in an accurate and objective court report. All the while, gauging the child's best interest, needs, wants, additional resources/supports, providing insight and recommendations.
